WASHINGTON DC, March 2, 2025 – Robert Amsterdam, an international lawyer and member of the legal team representing Sara Saleem, has hailed a groundbreaking new report published by the Iraq Watch Group of the Middle East Centre of the London School of Economics.
The report, entitled “The Shifting Landscape of Iraq’s Judiciary: Increased Judicial Activism, Centralisation and Politicisation after 2017,” brings independent verification and empirical research to support many of the core arguments in the Saleem case.
Sara Saleem was kidnapped and held for 43 days in captivity in 2014 by U.S.-designated terrorist organizations, which according to complaint before a US federal court, were acting at the behest of former business partners, Nizar Hanna Nasri, Nameer Abdo Nasri, and Ramiz Nasri (the Hanna brothers), who were intent on stealing her share of a real estate development project. Now, under the guidance of Supreme Court Justice Faiq Zaidan, those accused of these crimes are on the verge of being acquitted in a rigged process.
“What the LSE report proves about Justice Zaidan is his deep involvement in politicized networks of corruption and pay-for-play rulings. We are dealing with these aspects of the Iraqi judiciary under the misrule of Zaidan in the Saleem case, and we are determined to shine a light on these unlawful activities,” said Amsterdam.
Amsterdam indicated he would be publishing a new briefing document summarizing findings from the LSE report and other sourcing as it relates to the Saleem case in coming week.
